CSUMB hosts an accreditation review team from October 16-18 for the first phase of its Initial Accreditation Review under the new Western Association of Schools and Colleges accreditation model. A team of four evaluators plus a representative from WASC are on campus for the Preparatory Review visit. WASC has revised the standards it uses to evaluate institutions; the new standards are outcomes-based and organized around issues of capacity and educational effectiveness.

The team asks questions such as: How is CSUMB scaling up to serve more students? How have the Vision and core values been built into programs? How does the university know students are learning what it thinks they are learning? Does CSUMB have sufficient resources to sustain its educational program and support student learning?

The new accreditation model calls for the Initial Accreditation Review to be split into two components. The Preparatory Review focuses primarily on CSUMB's capacity to deliver, sustain, and grow its educational programs. The Educational Effectiveness Review focuses on the effectiveness of CSUMB's educational programs and its quality-improvement efforts throughout each division and will be held March 5-7, 2003.
