Mel Mason, a counselor at CSUMB's Personal Growth and Counseling Center, is presented with the 23rd annual Baha'i Human Rights Award on December 7 at the Elks Lodge in Monterey. In recognition of his community service to Monterey County, more than 175 members of the United Nations Association (UNA) of Monterey Bay, the MIIS Amnesty International Chapter, and the Baha'i Community of Monterey Bay attend the spirited and uplifting event- known as the annual Human Rights Day luncheon.
The afternoon's speaker is Ambassador David Scheffer, former U.S. Ambassador for War Crimes Issues and now senior vice-president of UNA-USA, who speaks on "Challenges in International Justice." Ambassador Scheffer underscores the need for people to follow Mel Mason's example: to speak out passionately and courageously for justice and for social change. Mason accepts the award with characteristic humility. Mason is currently president of the Monterey Peninsula chapter of the NAACP.
