Dean Marsha Moroh and the mathematics faculty at the College of Science, Media Arts, and Technology (SMART) develop Math HUGE-where classes of 66 students work in small groups using cooperative learning models to apply principles of mathematics to the solution of real-world problems. The results? Superior learning.

Where traditional programs have a pass-rate of roughly half the students, Math HUGE has a success rate of about 80%. By using diagnostic tests preceding each instructional unit, students complete the equivalent of two years of high school math classes in about one and a half semesters.

Through the innovative use of technology, SMART is able to personalize instruction, maximize the instructor's value when problems arise, and improve the successful teaching of mathematics. The computer science faculty has developed an assessment option for students who come to CSUMB with prior knowledge and skills in the areas of technology and information literacy. Close to 200 students per year now choose this combination of portfolio development and online interaction to fulfill the TECH/INFO University Learning Requirement.
