The Community Day of Welcome in August is a chance for new and existing employees to share each other's company and to celebrate the start of a new academic year. The audience hears a fascinating keynote address, sees new employees sign the Vision Statement, and attends afternoon workshops.
The keynote speaker is Dr. Marcia Baxter Magolda, Professor of Educational Leadership at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Magolda's talk is entitled, "Helping Students Make Their Way through the University: Good Company for the Journey."
Magolda's research, which began in 1986, studied 101 college students. Showing video interviews of some of those students, she describes the journeys of these young adults from graduation to their early thirties. Through the students' own observations about college life, she interprets their belief systems and sense of identity for the assembled CSUMB audience.
