The Visual and Public Art Institute (VPA) reaches out to teens in the community by hosting "High School Art Day." During December, about 60 enthusiastic students from Seaside High develop self-portraits while being coached by VPA students; the teens learn artistic expression and an array of technical skills. The activities are geared to be relevant, inspiring, educational, and fun for the high-schoolers. For the VPA students, the process is an opportunity for critical and ethical reflection-and a way to develop bridges between them and the Seaside High students.

The event is funded by the Reciprocal University for the Arts (RUAP), a joint project connecting VPA and the Music and Performing Arts Institute. RUAP works with four communities-Salinas, Seaside, Monterey and Watsonville-to further arts education in schools. Working in groups during the fall, VPA students planned the program, down to such details as budget, posters and T-shirt designs, and then visited Seaside High to encourage the students to participate.
