July 1994 opens the first academic year of California State University, Monterey Bay. During academic year 1994-1995, a small team of university officials, employees, contractors, and community members begin to tackle the task of transforming a 77-year-old military outpost into a full-fledged university. Many higher education experts claim that adequately founding a university would take a minimum of three to four years. This team, led by Hank Hendrickson, has only 13 months.
